The
Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Brenda Tambatamba, MP, has
officially launched the 2024 Pensions Awareness Week (PAW), a campaign aimed at
raising public awareness on the importance of preparing and saving for
retirement through pension schemes.
The
awareness week, which runs from November 4 to 9, 2024, is being held under the
theme “Empower Your Future: Dignify Your Retirement with a Pension.”
In
her address during the launch at Southern Sun Hotel, Minister Tambatamba
highlighted the importance of encouraging individuals to save for their future
through pension schemes, as a way to foster a culture of financial
responsibility and independence.
In
his welcoming remarks, Mr. Nchimunya Monde, Chairperson of the Zambia
Association of Pension Funds (ZAPF), urged citizens to take control of their
finances today to ensure a stable future. He also expressed optimism about the
completion and enactment of the draft Pension Scheme Regulation Act (PSRA)
bill, which will pave the way for micro-pensions to serve previously
underserved markets.
Mr.
Peter Banda, Board Chairperson of the Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA),
emphasized the role of financial literacy in achieving a dignified retirement.
He
affirmed PIA’s commitment to making pension information accessible to all
Zambians and encouraged pension service providers to conduct regular awareness
campaigns to promote financial security and literacy, given the complexities of
pension fund management.
